Created for old spec on Superheroes but still useful . Everything your Film students need to know in one place about mise-en-scene, lighting and cinematography. Useful in parts for GCSE Media. Should be printed in colour for maximum impact. Also contains short revision activities which can be used for homeworks or starters.

Tsotsi - GCSE Film Revision Booklet

This resource is a highly useful and engaging 24-page booklet to accompany any course studying the independent film of Tsotsi. There are other revision guides on the Internet for independent film and for Tsotsi, but they do not cater for a range of abilities. This booklet with its simplified language, key vocabulary sections, strong colour visuals and sample exam questions allows all students to become familiar with the concept of independent films, the background to this film and the type of analysis required for exam questions. Out of all the international films one can study, I found that this one is the most engaging for all abilities. I hope this booklet helps your students as much as it helped mine.

Topic 3 introduces the Mise-en-Scene topic of Lighting in the GCSE Film Studies course. Works just as well for the film units in a GCSE Media course. This unit starts to practice the use of film language and analytic writing needed for exam questions. Very accessible and well-structured lessons with starters, clear learning objectives and learning checks. Lots of repeat to ensure good recall of film language. I taught this course as Head of Inclusion for low-literacy and EAL pupils. With some editing, it will work just as well for high-ability students with lots of activities that suffice for whole class scaffolding or independent high-ability workers. You will need the DVDs or you tube clips of the referenced movies. I loved teaching Film Studies and hope you can enjoy and use these resources.
